Modena and around

History of the city

Historically it was a Roman colony named Mutina and from 1598 was for several centuries the capital of the duchy of Este (until it was annexed in 1859 to the entity state that two years later took the name of the Kingdom of Italy) and is an ancient university and the archbishop.

The Risorgimento was particularly supported by the Modenese, as Ciro Menotti and numerous groups Mazzini and the Carbonari of the city who voted compactly for the Unification of Italy in 1860.

The late nineteenth and early twentieth century Emilia (and in particular the province of Modena), became a bulwark socialist before and communist then.

Food and Wine

The province of Modena is at the center of a highly successful portion of the Po valley, in which lie the areas of typical production of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and Parma ham. These two glories of the national cuisine perfectly illustrate the characters from the Modenese cuisine based on cheese and especially on the pig, the animal most widely farmed in the area.

Typical dishes of the winter holidays are tortellini and stuffed pig's trotter, obtained respectively with ham and stuffed with ground pork rind in the foreleg. But you also get the pork lard essential for the typical fried dumplings: a square cake which goes very well with cold cuts.

The work, initially entrusted to the architect Gaspare Vigarani were later carried out by Bartolomeo Avanzini, but it seems that the project has been undergone by the supervision of Gian Lorenzo Bernini: the great architect seems to have participated in the creation of a work that reveals in a unit style, a baroque solemn and elegant.
